2008-2009 Student Standard Mode of Dress
The following standard mode of dress will be required for
all students at Southern Guilford High School for the 2008-09 school year. As you shop for
school clothes, please follow the guidelines below.
Revisions from 2007-2008 policy that
will be in place 2008-2009:
--ALL students, male and
FEMALE, must wear Polo shirts.
--No T-shirts or thermal
shirts can be worn over Polo shirts.
--PE students must wear
T-shirts (not tank tops), and they cannot wear red or royal blue clothing.
--No jackets or coats in the
classroom. Instead, you may wear solid-color fleece
garments, crew neck sweatshirts, long sleeve shirts, or sweaters.
The list below will be the ONLY approved
articles of clothing.
SMOD COLORS
Tops: Any solid color EXCEPT ROYAL BLUE OR RED; no trim; if there is a logo it can be no
larger than a quarter.
Bottoms: black,
navy, khaki (light tan), olive, brown, maroon – solid colors without trim; no
logo can be larger than a credit card
General Guidelines
- Not Allowed: skin
tight clothes, nylon, denim, oversized pants, oversized shirts, stripes,
jumpsuits, overalls, holes, cut-outs, sweat pants, or pajama pants
- We will have
modified rules during Homecoming week and on selected days.
- Athletes may
wear coach directed apparel on game days.
- Students taking courses requiring specific clothing
will be permitted to wear those items during that class period. (Medical Careers, Child Care)
- All coats and jackets must be stored in the
student’s locker upon entering the building.

Bottom Guidelines
- Waistbands must rest at or above hips
- Hemlines must be no shorter than 2 inches above the
knee and no longer than 1 inch below the ankle.
- Pants cannot be tucked into socks, boots, or shoes
Tops
- Long or short sleeved Polo shirts with two or more
buttons
- Crewneck sweatshirts or sweaters and official Southern Guilford sweatshirt (no “hoodies”)
- Hoodless cardigan sweaters with approved shirt
underneath
- Long or short sleeved turtlenecks
Guidelines
for Tops
- Male
shirts must remain tucked in at the waist at all times with belt/waist
line visible
- Females
can wear shirts that reach at or below the waist but above the hip
- Any
outside top may not hang past straddle of
- T-shirts
cannot be worn as the primary shirt; a t-shirt can be worn under clothing
if it follows the SMOD color guidelines, is not larger than the primary
shirt, and writing or graphics must not show through the top garment.
- Only
the top two buttons on any shirt may be unbuttoned.
- Undershirts’
sleeves must be shorter than outer shirt’s sleeves.
Accessories
- No
chained or decorative belts or decorative belt buckles allowed. Excess
belt must be tucked into loops.
- All
accessories, including jewelry, must be appropriate and not distracting to
learning.

- No
slippers or bedroom shoes.
- Shoes
must be matching, appropriate, and not distracting.
- Shoes
with laces must be tied.
- Hats,
sunglasses, gloves, scarves, dew rags, and bandannas are not permitted
Failure to meet SMOD expectations will result in the student missing
class in Choices while waiting for a parent to deliver appropriate clothing to
school.
Repeated noncompliance will be considered defiant behavior and will
result in disciplinary consequences.
